How to set up a welfare-first chinchilla habitat

A practical guide to enclosure size, ledges, dust baths, cooling and unsafe materials.

Start with space and temperature

Choose a tall enclosure with secure ledges, good ventilation and a cool room position. Chinchillas are vulnerable to overheating, so the setup should be planned around temperature before decoration.

Warning: Avoid direct sun, humid rooms and enclosed plastic habitats.

Build a safe interior

Use solid ledges, a hide, hay rack, water bottle, food bowl and chew-safe enrichment. Keep plastic, loose fibres and unstable platforms out of reach.

Helpful tip: Arrange ledges so falls are interrupted by platforms rather than one long drop.

Plan dust bathing and cleaning

Offer a dust bath for short supervised sessions and spot clean daily. Remove damp areas immediately and keep hay fresh.
